Depravity on the Slopes
That time “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” went skiing.
-I’m not a huge “Sunny” fan, but I catch the odd episode now and then and am usually amused by them. This one, however I am ashamed to say flew under my radar upon its initial release, and I didn’t catch up with it until a couple of years after it came out. Whether you’re a fan of the show or not, this particular episode is definitely worth a watch as it’s all about skiing and snowboarding and has some great nostalgic throwback references to how ski slopes used to be and about the menace of mega-corps and greed turning them into something foul.
-Some laughs, some skiing, and a little depravity. What more could you ask for. Below is the trailer and a few clips from the show that will surely inspire you to give it a watch if you’ve never seen it. Enjoy! ~Z. Phelan~
The gang goes skiing
The plot (if you can call it that) is that Frank Reynolds is scheming to buy the fictional “Snow Mountain” in the Poconos with the idea of turning it into a mega resort for the super rich and building condos and all the upgrades that come with a transformation of that type. Charlie meanwhile meets and befriends some of the town’s original ski bums that turn him on to the ski lifestyle and old school mountain traditions and warn him what will happen if the ski area goes corporate. Soon enough the gang is split, with some supporting Frank’s evil plan and some wanting the ski town to remain true to it’s roots. A ski race ensues with the winner getting their way, and I wont spoil the finish for you by elaborating any further.
The writers of the show have obviously done some serious research into ski culture and probably grew up with some of the classic ski films as there are strong references to 1980’s-90’s (cheesy) ski flicks. The corporatization of small ski areas is a fundamental theme of the show as well, hinting to an all to real predicament that many ski areas seem to find themselves in these days.
The whole episode and all ski scenes are actually filmed at California’s Mammoth Mountain in the Springtime. Which makes sense seeing as the show is actually filmed in Los Angeles.
